300 GSM vs 350 GSM Business Cards — Which Paper Weight Is Right?

When you order business cards in India, the printer will almost always ask: 300 GSM or 350 GSM? Most people pick one at random, and it's the single most common regret we hear about. Here's what's actually different.
What GSM means
GSM stands for "grams per square metre" — it's the density of the paper. The higher the number, the heavier and stiffer the card. 300 GSM is the lower end of what counts as "premium" card stock. 350 GSM is firmly in the premium range. Anything below 250 GSM feels like a postcard, not a business card.
The hand-feel difference
The difference between 300 and 350 GSM is 50 grams per square metre — about 17% denser. In practice, that's the difference between a card that bends slightly when held by one edge (300 GSM) and one that stays rigid (350 GSM). Both feel like proper business cards; only the 350 GSM feels noticeably premium.
Test this yourself: hold any business card in your hand and tap the long edge against the table. A 300 GSM card makes a soft tap. A 350 GSM card makes a sharper click. That difference is what people register subconsciously when you hand them your card.
When 300 GSM is the right call
- Large quantities (5000+). Paper price scales linearly with weight; 300 GSM saves real money at scale.
- Cards you give away in bulk. Promotional flyers handed out at trade shows, conference attendee packs — 300 GSM is fine.
- Cards that fold or score. 350 GSM is harder to fold cleanly without cracking; 300 GSM scores better.
When 350 GSM is worth it
- You're trying to be remembered. 350 GSM feels expensive in a way that's hard to articulate but impossible to ignore.
- You're handing cards to clients, not crowds. The premium feel translates to a premium impression.
- You're adding finishes like spot UV or foil. Heavier paper holds these finishes better.
The Remprint default
We default to 350 GSM with matte lamination on both sides because it's the right call for most professionals ordering 100–500 cards. The cost difference vs 300 GSM is genuinely small at small quantities, and the perceived-quality difference is large.
