3mm vs 5mm vs 8mm Acrylic — Which Thickness for Your Wall?

Acrylic prints come in three common thicknesses in India: 3mm, 5mm, and 8mm. Most printers won't ask which you want; they'll default to 5mm. That's the right call most of the time — but not always. Here's how to think about it.

3mm acrylic

Light, affordable, fast to ship. Good clarity. Slight flex if you grip the long edge of a large print.

• Best for prints up to 8×10
• Best if budget is tight
• Light enough to hang plain with your own hooks or strips
• Avoid for prints larger than 16×20 — visible flex

5mm acrylic (the workhorse)

The standard. Most Indian print shops default to 5mm because it works at almost every size and viewing distance.

• Best for prints from 8×10 up to 24×36
• Best for stud (4-stud) wall mounting — feels substantial
• Edge depth (5mm) reads visibly without dominating
• The right answer if you're not sure

8mm acrylic (the statement)

Premium thickness. Edges are visibly chunky and catch the light. Heavy.

• Best for prints 18×24 and larger
• Best for stud mounting (the architectural feel multiplies)
• Best for office lobbies, conference rooms, or any "investment piece" wall
• Heavy — best on studs, which need a drilled wall
• Costs noticeably more than 5mm — make sure the print earns it

A note on weight

An 8mm 24×36 acrylic print weighs about 5kg. Plaster walls handle that fine with proper anchors. Hollow-block walls need expansion bolts. If you're not sure about your wall, send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll advise.
