Designing for a Roll-Up Banner — The Readability Rules

Roll-up banners fail in three reliable ways: text is too small, the design has no hierarchy, and the most important element ends up in the wrong vertical zone. Here are the rules that prevent each.
Vertical zones
A roll-up banner reads top to bottom in three layers:
- Top 25% (eye-level above heads): brand logo + headline. Visible across the entire hall.
- Middle 50% (eye-level when standing 2m away): the main message, hero image, key benefits.
- Bottom 25% (knee-level): details, contact, QR codes. Only read when someone walks up close.
Mistake: putting the QR code at the top, or the logo at the bottom. The verticals matter.
Text size minimums
- Headline: 80–120 pt (about 3–4 cm tall)
- Sub-headline: 40–60 pt
- Body text: 18–24 pt (no smaller, or it won't read from 2m)
- Contact details: 14–18 pt
If you're laying out in Canva or a similar tool, set the canvas size to the actual banner dimensions (85×200 cm) — relative sizes are misleading at thumbnail size.
Don't include more than 50 words total
A roll-up banner is a poster, not a brochure. Total word count across the entire banner should be 40–60 words. If you find yourself writing more, you have a brochure problem and need a different format.
Image quality
The banner prints at 200×85 cm. For sharp images at that size:
- Hero image: minimum 3000×7000 pixels
- Logo: vector (SVG/AI) format. Raster logos pixelate at this size.
- Background: either a solid colour, a subtle gradient, or an extremely high-res photo. No mid-resolution photos — they look pixelated up close.
Common mistakes
- Bottom-aligned phone number. Bottom 25% is below knee height when standing. Move it to the middle zone.
- Centred text everywhere. Left-aligned text is faster to read. Centre only headlines.
- Five product photos side-by-side. The viewer can't process five at this distance. Show one hero image; list the rest as text.
- Long URLs as the call-to-action. Use a short URL or a QR code; nobody types
