Foam Board Signage Materials: Art Card, Sunboard, Foam — Which to Use

"Foam board" is the umbrella term Indian print shops use for any rigid printed board — but underneath, there are three very different materials. They look similar at a glance and behave completely differently.

1. Art card (300 GSM)

The lightest "rigid" material. Technically still paper — just very thick.

• Thickness: ~0.4 mm
• Stiffness: mild — can be propped on an easel, won't stand on its own at large sizes
• Best for: tabletop signage, A4–A3 menu boards, photo booths, lightweight name boards
• Avoid for: outdoor use (warps in humidity), anything large enough to need free-standing rigidity
• Cost: the cheapest of the three

2. Sunboard (PVC foam)

A rigid foam plastic — the most common "foam board" sold in Indian print shops. Lightweight but properly rigid.

• Thickness: 3, 5, or 10 mm
• Stiffness: firm — large signs stay flat without support
• Best for: permanent indoor signage, exhibition signs, name boards, retail point-of-sale
• Outdoor lifespan: 6–12 months under shade; not for direct rain
• Cost: mid-range

3. Foam-core board (paper-faced foam)

A core of polystyrene foam sandwiched between two paper faces. Very light, very rigid.

• Thickness: 3, 5, or 10 mm
• Stiffness: exceptional — even at 24×36, no sag
• Best for: indoor signage, photography backdrops, mounting boards, premium event signs
• Avoid for: outdoor use (the paper faces dent easily; humidity warps the foam)
• Cost: slightly higher than sunboard

How to choose

• Tabletop menu or A4–A3 indoor sign? → art card (300 GSM)
• Larger sign, indoor permanent use? → sunboard (5 mm)
• Premium event signage, indoor, ultra-light? → foam-core board (5 mm)
• Outdoor use even occasionally? → none of the above. Use vinyl on backing.

The honest truth about durability

All three of these are designed as semi-permanent indoor signage. For 5+ years of outdoor use, you want acrylic, ACP, or sintra board — not foam board. Use foam board where the affordability matters and you'll replace the sign in 1–2 years anyway.
