Glossy vs Matte vs Lustre Photo Prints — Picking a Finish

The finish on a photo print is the single most underrated decision in custom photo printing. Most people pick glossy because it's what camera shops have offered for thirty years — but matte and lustre are often the better call. Here's how each actually behaves.

Glossy

Reflective surface, like a magazine cover. Colours look vivid and saturated. Blacks look deeper. Reflections are very visible — direct light bouncing off the print into your eye.

• Best for: vivid travel photos, sunset shots, photos with strong colour, prints kept in albums (no light hitting them)
• Avoid for: framed prints under glass (double reflection — distracting), portraits where skin tones matter (glossy can over-saturate)

Matte

No reflection, slightly textured surface. Colours look softer and more "natural." Blacks look slightly less deep. Photo feels more like fine-art paper.

• Best for: portraits, black-and-white photos, prints for framing (no reflection problems), gallery-style display
• Avoid for: photos that depend on vibrant colour to work (travel, landscapes with strong sunsets — they can look muted)

Lustre (semi-gloss / pearl)

The middle ground. Subtle reflection, fine pebble-textured surface. Colours are nearly as vivid as glossy but reflections are much less aggressive.

• Best for: general purpose — when you're not sure, this is the safe choice
• Best for portraits AND landscapes — handles both well
• Often the right call for wedding photos — preserves skin tone while staying lively
• Costs slightly more than glossy or matte in some price lists; usually a wash

A quick rule

If the photo will be held in the hand or kept in an album, go glossy. If it'll be framed under glass, go matte. If you don't know yet or it'll be displayed without glass, go lustre.
