Lamination on Tent Cards: Do You Need It?

Tent card lamination is one of those decisions where the right answer depends entirely on the use. Skip it on wedding place cards; insist on it for restaurant table cards. Here's the logic.

When lamination is essential

• Restaurant table tents: survive water rings, oil spills, finger smudges, repeated handling. Without lamination, they become unreadable in weeks.
• Hospitality / hotel room tents: guests use them as coasters, leave drinks on them. Lamination is mandatory.
• Bar menu tent cards: condensation from drinks runs down them. Lamination prevents the ink from running.
• Cafeteria / canteen specials: high-touch environments. Always laminate.

When you can skip lamination

• Wedding place cards: single-event use; laminated place cards look "plastic-y" and the un-laminated card stock feels more premium.
• Conference name tents: single-event; remove and discard after.
• Premium product launch tent cards: the uncoated paper texture signals luxury better than a laminated finish.
• Speaker tents on stage: not handled; uncoated 350 GSM looks more refined under lights.

Matte vs glossy lamination on tent cards

Same principles as on other print pieces:

• Matte: premium feel, no glare, hides fingerprints — preferred for upscale restaurants
• Glossy: colours pop more, easier to wipe clean — preferred for casual diners, food trucks, fast-casual

What about anti-fingerprint coatings?

Soft-touch / anti-fingerprint coatings are now widely available in India. They add ~40% to the lamination cost. Worth it for premium restaurant tent cards (especially dark-colour designs where fingerprints are very visible) but not for casual use.

A note on tent card design + lamination interaction

If you're laminating, design for it:

• Lamination slightly darkens dark colours (gloss makes them deeper; matte makes them slightly muted)
• Lamination preserves whites; pure-white backgrounds stay crisp under lamination
• For dark backgrounds (black, navy, deep maroon), matte lamination prevents the "shiny black" effect that catches glare unevenly
