Matte vs Glossy Lamination on Brochures — The Practical Difference

Almost every premium Indian brochure gets laminated. The choice of matte or glossy looks like a minor detail but actually changes everything about how the brochure communicates. Here's what's different.

Glossy lamination

A clear, shiny film bonded to the printed paper. Colours pop. Blacks look deeper. Reflections are visible from any angle.

• Best for: brochures with vivid imagery (travel, food, fashion); product catalogues with photo-heavy spreads
• Hands-feel: slick, slightly slippery
• Photographs: shows fingerprints and reflections in marketing photos — be careful when promoting on social
• Reading: can cause glare in bright Indian office lighting

Matte lamination

A clear, non-shiny film with a slight texture. Colours look slightly more "subdued" — actually more natural and less artificially saturated. No reflections.

• Best for: corporate brochures, services (consulting, finance, legal), education, healthcare
• Hands-feel: soft, almost suede-like; signals premium
• Photographs: beautifully — no glare, no fingerprints visible
• Reading: easier on the eyes; readable under any lighting

A specific colour caveat

If your brochure has vivid red, orange, or yellow as primary colours, glossy preserves them better. Matte slightly mutes these warm colours; on glossy they remain "loud." For a Diwali-themed gift catalogue or a food menu, glossy is often the right call for this reason.

Cost difference

Matte and glossy lamination cost essentially the same. The choice is purely aesthetic — there's no budget reason to pick one over the other.

Spot UV (the premium upgrade)

An option worth knowing about: matte lamination with selective glossy highlights on specific elements (logo, title, key images). The contrast between matte and glossy patches creates a tactile and visual emphasis. Costs ~30% more than plain matte lamination. Used most often on premium business cards and luxury brochure covers.
