Self-Publishing in India: Print-on-Demand vs Offset — When to Use Which

If you're self-publishing a book in India — a novel, a poetry collection, a memoir, a non-fiction title — you'll choose between print-on-demand (POD) and offset printing. The two have different economics, different lead times, and different quality ceilings.

Print-on-demand (POD)

Books are printed one at a time, as orders come in. Lower per-unit cost? No — higher. But zero upfront investment.

• Per-unit cost (250-page paperback): ₹180–250
• Minimum order: 1 book
• Lead time per order: 5–10 business days
• Quality: good — modern digital presses produce sharp text and full-colour interior pages well
• Best for: first-time authors, niche audiences, sequel releases, signed editions to bookstores

Offset printing

Books are printed in bulk using traditional offset presses. Higher upfront cost, much lower per-unit cost at scale.

• Per-unit cost (250-page paperback at 1000 copies): ₹70–100
• Minimum order: typically 500–1000 books
• Lead time: 3–5 weeks (setup + run + binding)
• Quality: slightly better at scale — more colour fidelity, better ink absorption
• Best for: established authors with confirmed demand, bookstores requesting stock, library/institutional buyers

The break-even

For most self-publishers, the offset break-even is around 200–300 copies. Below that, POD is cheaper (factoring in storage, leftover stock, capital tie-up). Above that, offset is significantly cheaper per copy.

The honest math: if you don't know whether you'll sell 200 copies, start with POD. Move to offset only when demand is proven.

Mixing the two

Many Indian self-publishers use both:

• Offset run of 500 at launch, for the first wave of sales
• POD top-ups after that, for slower long-tail sales
• POD for signed/dedicated editions with personal inscription per copy

Distribution considerations

POD books can be sold one at a time and shipped directly to readers via Amazon, Flipkart, or your own site. Offset books need warehouse space and a distributor for wide retail availability — unless you ship them yourself, which adds operational complexity.
