UV vs Solvent Printing on Vinyl Banners — What's the Difference?

Almost every vinyl banner in India is printed using one of two ink technologies: UV-curable or eco-solvent. Both produce sharp, full-colour prints. The difference shows up after a few months under the Indian sun.
UV printing
UV inks cure (harden) instantly when exposed to ultraviolet light from the print head. The ink sits on top of the vinyl rather than soaking in.
- Colour vibrancy: high — colours are crisp and saturated
- Outdoor lifespan: 1–2 years in direct Indian sun before noticeable fading
- Drying time: instant — banners can be installed minutes after printing
- Best for: short-term promotional banners, indoor signage, anything that'll be used and replaced within 12 months
- Cost: the lower-cost option of the two
Solvent (and eco-solvent) printing
Solvent inks penetrate the vinyl as they dry, becoming part of the material instead of sitting on top.
- Colour vibrancy: high (similar to UV)
- Outdoor lifespan: 3–5 years in direct Indian sun before noticeable fading
- Drying time: 6–24 hours; banners need cure time before installation
- Best for: long-term outdoor signage, shopfronts, anything you want to install once and forget
- Cost: slightly higher than UV; the durability difference is usually worth it for outdoor use
How to choose
- Will it hang in direct sun for more than 6 months? → solvent
- One-time event banner (wedding, exhibition)? → UV
- Shopfront banner you'll replace seasonally? → UV
- Permanent shopfront signage you'll mount and leave? → solvent
What about lamination?
Both UV and solvent prints can be optionally laminated with a clear protective layer that extends outdoor life by another 1–2 years. For premium signage in coastal Indian cities (Goa, Chennai, Mumbai), lamination on a solvent print is the longest-lasting combination available.
