Wedding Albums and Family Photo Books — Printing in India

Indian wedding albums used to be hand-bound by local studios. Today, "photo book" production is a different category — digitally printed, professionally bound, archive-quality. Here's how to get one done well in India.
The format that works
For wedding albums and family photo books:
- Size: 10×10 or 12×12 inch (square format reads "premium" and accommodates both portrait and landscape photos)
- Binding: hardcover, sewn-bound — paperback is too fragile for a wedding album that'll be passed around
- Interior paper: 130 GSM coated art paper minimum; some premium albums use 200 GSM
- Page count: 40–80 pages (20–40 spreads) is the sweet spot — anything more becomes overwhelming
Photo selection rules
The #1 mistake: trying to include every good photo. A wedding album with 200 photos is forgettable. One with 50 carefully chosen photos is loved.
- One hero photo per spread. Resist the urge to add four small photos around it.
- Chronological sequence usually works best — pre-wedding, wedding day, reception, candids in that order
- Include 2–3 detail shots (rings, mehndi, jewellery) between people shots to break up the rhythm
- Skip the photos everyone has. Five different shots of the same couple in similar poses dilute the impact.
Design layouts that work
Three layouts that work consistently:
- Full-bleed single photo — one photo covers the entire spread, no white space, no text. Most impactful for the strongest shots.
- Photo + caption — photo takes 80% of the spread, with a single date or single sentence below. Adds context without crowding.
- Diptych — two photos side by side. Works for "moment + reaction" pairs (couple looking at each other, family looking at couple).
Cover design
Hardcover photo book covers come in three styles:
- Photo wrap: a photo printed across the entire cover. Most popular for weddings — usually the engagement portrait or a candid couple shot.
- Cloth cover with foil stamp: textile-bound (linen, raw silk) with foiled names + date. Premium, archival.
- Leather cover with engraved nameplate: traditional formal style; favoured by elder generations.
How many copies to order
Indian families typically order:
- 1 master copy for the couple (8×8 or 10×10 inch, premium binding)
- 2–4 family copies for parents/grandparents (smaller size, ~8×8 inch)
- 5–10 mini copies for close relatives (~6×6 inch, fewer pages)
Total budget: anywhere from ₹3,000 (single mini copy) to ₹50,000 (full family set, premium binding).
Lead time
Photo book production takes 7–14 days from print-ready files. Wedding-photo couples often want the album in time for an anniversary or housewarming — order 3 weeks before you need it to be safe.
Family heritage albums
A growing category: collecting old family photos (grandparents, parents' wedding, ancestors) into a heritage album. These often:
- Use slightly larger sizes (10×12 inch portrait) to accommodate vintage photo proportions
- Need photo restoration (we can clean dust, fix scratches, colour-correct fade — ask)
- Work better with captions because younger family members don't recognise everyone
- Make particularly meaningful gifts for elder relatives' milestone birthdays
